What is the corresponding relationship between channels of communication and structure of an organization?

What is the corresponding relationship between channels of communication and structure of an organization? Can anyone explain with the help of an organizational chart?

The structure of the organization and channels of communication are closely related. For example, if you get an email requesting you to do something you need to understand who the person is in your organization and if you should honor their request. If it is your boss then you would carry out the request, if it is a department head from another division you would probably ask your boss if it is OK. This is because the department head, though your superior in the organization, they are not in your line of reporting in the organization structure.
